Okay ladies (and gents), show my your cakes!

We're going to a cake tasting on Sunday, so I need some ideas.

We saw this sea urchin cake (under the cut) and fell in love, but we're open to other designs. We're also constructing a cupcake tower and my stepfather's sister will be making the cupcakes for that.

*ears perk up*
Did someone say CAKE?!?!?

The top twp layers were Chocolate Bourbon Cake with Cookies and Cream filling, and the top (which came home with us) was Chocolate Bourbon Cake with Peanut Butter filling.

SO good. SO SO good.

I totally dig the sea urchin cake, but only if you're doing a beach theme or beach wedding. Also, I'd pick one or the other; both seems overkill and different styles clashing.

We are having a beach theme! =]

The only reason why we're doing both is because the urchin cake is small and will only feed about 20 people, so that's our bridal party and parents. Everyone else will get cupcakes.

I really like the sea urchin cake!

Our flavor was Pear Pistachio Fizz... batter marinated in pear liquor with layers of pistachio mousse, pear mousse, and champagne mousse. The flowers are edible, but are an extreme close match to the flowers we used.

We're building a cupcake tower, too.
By we, I mean I
and by building, I mean trying to =P
(any design tips/tutorials would be greatly appreciated, because atm I'm only working off a picture and it's kinda tough for someone with very little woodwork experience).

I like cakecentral.com for browsing designs. Here are some that I've favourited:

(but without the icing.. thing.. on the top)

P.s. this is the link to the pic I'm using to build my cupcake stand, in case you needed some visuals: http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-ftopict-22674.html

We wanted some simple with fresh flowers. And we both hate fondant.

The top and bottom layers were chocolate cake with a raspberry mousse filling. The middle layer was white cake with caramel filling.

Unless I'm completely missing something you've got a starfish (also known as sea star) climbing down your cake, that's how they look when they move. Also, at the bottom there is a real dry starfish (or could be synthetic).

There are two starfish on the top (as toppers) and a real dried one with sand at the bottom. But the actual three tiers are sea urchins.

My FH is a big comic geek and I have slowly become one as well...Liking mostly the super heros that are girls... Harley Quinn being one of them, so we are getting this cake made with out the dice and the cake toppers being Harley Quinn and The Joker...which match my FH tattoos on his arms The Joker on one arm and Harley on the other...

My FH is French, so we're planning on having a pièce montée, which is a traditional French wedding cake...it's basically just a tower of cream puffs! Here's an example:
