A GIANT thank you, and some news!

Yesterday I posted about all the issues I'm having with choosing a wedding gown. First of all, I want to send each of you a huuuuuuuge thank you from the bottom of my heart. After I answered a few comments, I had an appointment to go to, and once I got back there were so many! So even though I wasn't able to answer each and every comment, really and truly, you guys are so wonderful. Thank you all so much for relating your stories and your feelings. It's wonderful to know that I'm not the only stressed and worried bride when it comes to wedding gown issues, and that there are others who went through it too.

I've been on quite a few communities that can get catty and filled with drama, and while I'm sure this one has it's moments like any other, I am really floored by the way all you girls (and some guys!) pull together and help each other out. I've yet to see anyone be really rude, and everyone offers up great advice, opinions, and experiences. So a big bravo to you all, and another heartfelt thank you. You're all making planning so much easier for me!

I'd been so discouraged with shopping for a stupid wedding dress that I'd resolved Friday night that this entire weekend would be totally wedding free. Well.. we all know how that works out, right? After I made my post here yesterday, I decided that I was going to try out the one last boutique I haven't been to here in Asheville. So, mentally exhausted and all, I hopped in the car and drove out there.

Let me just say how dispiriting it is for me to walk into a bridal boutique that only carries size ten, then have to try and squeeze into them to get a feel for how I might look in that dress. After trying on about 6, I was done. I walked back out to the car and realized that I was only minutes away from David's Bridal. Maybe I should go back again, hm?

Back I went, and it being a Saturday, the store was PACKED. It was absolute madness. I literally almost turned around and walked right back out the door. But then one of the ladies who had seen me around says "Does Amanda know you're here?" Amanda is the consultant I'd been working with. So the other lady grabs me and pulls me through the store to Amanda, who is happy to see me. Hooray for that at least! I was devastatingly tired, but just to see her smiling at me made me feel better.

Here's where it gets interesting. A couple of nights ago, I asked a friend of mine (whose sense of style borders on immaculate) to take a look at some David's Bridal dresses and pick out some that she really liked. Now, this girl can throw on jeans and a t-shirt and make herself look like Audrey Hepburn. She is so timelessly and classically stylish! I value her opinion so much, and I was just finished with trying to find a gown for myself. So she picked out some style numbers and I wrote them down.

I handed that list to Amanda, and off she went to find the dresses. She brought back three gowns - two of which looked just about like everything else I'd ever tried on, and the other was the most hideous thing I'd ever seen. Needless to say, I tried on one of the ones that looked so familiar first. Got it on and again, blah. Meh. It's ok. Then Amanda says "It's nice, but I want to see you in this lacy one. Put this one on next".

So into the dressing room I go again, and I put the ugly thing on. I step out, not wanting to walk out in front of all those girls in such a yucky dress. But I walk out anyway and Amanda zips me. And when I turn and look in the mirror...

I liked it. Not just "meh" liked it, but... I kept blinking and realizing that I really liked it. Amanda was kind of staring at me, looking like she was trying not to show the emotion she wanted to, and I was still staring in the mirror. That's when I said "Do you have a sash to go with this?" I don't think I've ever seen anyone take off so quickly. She was back to me in a minute flat with about 40 sashes. XD I just picked one and tied it on... and I looked some more... and some more... and then I asked for a veil and a sparkly comb.

At some point between me getting the gown on and me getting that veil on, I cracked a smile. That's when Amanda cracked a smile too. I looked at her and said "This is it." And the real kicker? I DID tear up. I was so bitter and mad and discouraged with all those dresses for so long that I wanted to shake my fist and say "NOOOO!" and show no emotion at all, but I smiled and I grinned and I bit my lower lip, and I honest to god almost cried.

Never in a million years would I have EVER have chosen this gown - not off the rack, not in a catalog, and not online. Never. But my friend's timeless fashion sense chose it for me, and for that I can never thank her enough. I've found my wedding gown!

I hesitate to show it to you guys, because the photo online is just utterly awful, and the gown is so much prettier... but this is it. The photo does in no way do it justice. It's so much more beautiful in person! The lace is so gorgeous, and it's such a classic, 1960's, NYC, Breakfast at Tiffany's type style to me, and I feel like Audrey in it. I adore it. Hell, if you want to know the truth, I tossed and turned all night long, waking up every hour, thinking about it. AAAAHHHH!!!! XD I'm so excited.

ETA: Also, the dress is WHITE, which I was deadset against! I wanted ivory or champagne, or maybe even pink, but the sample I tried on was white, and I can't imagine it in any other color. :D

I know that people have mixed opinions of David's Bridal, but my consultant has been an absolute gem from the very start. I realize that designer gowns are likely of better quality, but a big part of my decision to try and find a dress at David's has to do with my mother. David's is currently having a credit promotion with no interest and no payments for one year. Now... my mother has paid out a loooot of money so far on this wedding, and anything I can do for her that makes her life a little easier... I'll do it. Even if I found a beautiful dress elsewhere, I could never be happy in it, knowing that it was going to be blood, sweat, and tears for her to pay it off in addition to all the other expenses. Understandable?

So in the end I have a consultant I love, a dress that I adore, and my mom likes it too! I feel so relieved and happy and excited now! I feel like everything else is all downhill (in a good way!) from here on out. :)

Thank you one and all who commented on my entry yesterday. You are all so special and wonderful, and your advice and opinions and comments mean the world to me. Thank you thank you! And if you've read this far, you're a trooper, and I thank you again!

I think it looks good in the picture and it has great reviews, so there must just be something about that dress! Glad you found THE dress! And props to your friend with the classic style for picking it out!

Yeaaaaaaah, it's not bad in the photos, but I guess seeing how gorgeous it is in person is what makes me think that picture is so awful. XD

Thank you so much! I'm definitely going to have to do something special for my friend!

That's a wonderful story! I had a very similar experience--I knew exactly what kind of gown I wanted, and I tried on a bunch in that style, and they just didn't look good on me. And then my mom pulled exactly the kind of dress I DIDN'T want off the shelf--lacy top, HUGE tulle skirt--and handed it to me. I was sure I would hate it, but she asked me to try it on, just for fun.

I put it on, and it was perfect, and it was my wedding dress.

Thank you! Isn't it funny how that works?? It's so hard to tell how something will look when you just either see it on a perfect size 4 model or on the hanger.

Hooray for you too! I think it's kind of neat that we both found dresses that way!

Thank you so much! My friend definitely gets something special! I totally did not think I was the type that would tear up like that, but I think it was just such a release of stress, you know?

Yay! I'm so happy you found the dress of your dreams! It's gorgeous and I'm sure you look amazing in it!

My friends and I used to go "Ugly dress" shopping, we'd find the most hideous dresses possible on the rack (color and style wise), and then try them on. We learned some very interesting things about what colors and styles look good on us as some of the dresses had surprising results. The lesson learned was you never know how you'll look until you try it on.

I read your post the other day and felt so terrible for you. Hooray for finally finding a dress that makes you feel pretty and like a bride! It's a gorgeous dress and one that I've in my DB list of favorites for a while now. Now that you can check one of your major "to-do's" off the list, you feel a bit like this lady:

Relief! ;)

You're going to be a beautiful bride. Can't wait to see how the rest of your planning experience turns out.

Hahaha, I think that lady is actually one that gave it a bad review for being so heavy! I don't mind a bit that it's heavy, and I certainly didn't expect a wedding gown to be lightweight!

Thank you so much. :) I hope that my incessant posting here won't start to annoy people, but you guys are just great!
